We all know that air bags can sometimes do more damage than good, esepcially with children.
Why not install the air bag in the floor, or in the seat, and have it discharge upwards instead of towards you. This would eliminate the impact it would cause on people, since it wouldn't "punch" you in the face on impact, but instead discharge away from you. It would still have the same benefit, because it would help to cushion the impact.
Of course, you would have to make sure the driver or passenger didn't have their foot or legs on the device. This would be pretty simple with some instructions on the discharge location not to cover it. And maybe you would even disable it if someone was covering it, and use the backup normal type of airbag.
